SECTION A – AGRICULTURE, FORESTS AND FISHERIES

This section includes the exploitation of plant and livestock natural resources. It covers activities such as cultivating plants, raising and breeding animals, cutting trees and other plants, slaughtering animals, and harvesting their products from a farm or their natural environment.

This section covers the production of plant and livestock products, both organic and genetically modified, in open fields and in greenhouses.

This section also includes incidental agricultural service activities, as well as hunting, trapping, and related activities.

Group 01.5 (Mixed agricultural activities) conflicts with the usual principles for identifying the main activity. This group acknowledges that many farms have balanced balances of crop and livestock production and can arbitrarily be classified as belonging to either category.

Agricultural activities exclude the further processing of agricultural products classified in division 10 and 11 (Processing of food and beverages) and in division 12 (Processing of tobacco products), necessary after their preparation for primary markets.

Processing of products for primary markets is included here.

Agricultural activity does not include earthworks (e.g., terracing agricultural land, drainage, rice paddy preparation, etc.) classified in Section F (Construction) and buyers and cooperatives engaged in marketing the products of farms classified in Section G. Also excluded is land maintenance for keeping it in good agricultural and ecological condition, which is classified under class 81.30 (Land care and maintenance).

01 Plant and animal production, hunting and related services

This division includes two basic activities: the production of plant products and the production of animal products. This category includes forms of organic farming as well as the cultivation of genetically modified crops and the raising of genetically modified animals. It includes the cultivation of crops in open fields and in greenhouses.

Also included are the activities of unspecified services to agriculture, hunting, trapping, and related activities.

01.1 Cultivation of non-perennial plants

This group includes the cultivation of non-perennial plants, i.e., plants that do not live for more than two growing seasons. It also includes the cultivation of these plants for seed production.

01.11 Cultivation of cereals (excluding rice), legumes, and oilseeds

This class includes all forms of open-field cultivation of cereals, legumes, and oilseeds. The cultivation of these crops is often combined within farming units.

This class includes:

• the cultivation of cereals such as wheat, corn, sorghum, barley, rye, millet, oats, and other cereals not classified elsewhere
• the cultivation of other legume crops such as fava beans, forage beans, peas of all kinds, lentils, lupines, and other legume crops
• the cultivation of oilseeds such as soybeans, peanuts, cottonseed, castor bean (Ricinus communis), flaxseed, sesame seed, sunflower seed, and other oilseeds

12.01 Rice cultivation

This class includes:

• rice cultivation, including organic and genetically modified rice cultivation

01.13 Cultivation of vegetables and melons and watermelons, root and tuber crops

This class includes:

• the cultivation of leafy or stemmed vegetables such as artichokes, asparagus, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, lettuce, chicory, spinach, and other leafy or stemmed vegetables
  • the cultivation of fruit-bearing vegetables such as cucumber, eggplant, tomato, watermelon, melon, and other varieties with fruit
  • the cultivation of root, bulb, or tuber vegetables such as carrots, turnips, garlic, onions, leeks, and other similar root, bulb, or tuber vegetables.
  • cultivation of mushrooms and truffles
  • The cultivation of vegetable seeds includes sugar beet seeds, excluding seeds of other beets.
  • the cultivation of sugar beet
  • the cultivation of other vegetables
  • the cultivation of root and tuber vegetables such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, other roots, and tubers

This class does not include:

• Cultivation of aromatic and pungent seeds, see 01.28

01.14 Sugarcane cultivation

This class does not include:

• cultivation of sugar beet, see 01.13

01.15 Tobacco Cultivation

This class includes:

• Cultivation of raw tobacco, stacked/hung tobacco

This class does not include:

• See processed tobacco products 12.00

01.16 Cultivation of fiber plants

This class includes:

• cotton cultivation
  • the cultivation of hemp, kenaf, and other bast fiber crops
  • the cultivation of flax and hemp
  • the cultivation of sisal and other textile fibers from the agave genus
  • the cultivation of abaca, nettle, and other vegetable textile fibers
  • the cultivation of other fibrous plants

01.19 Cultivation of other non-perennial plants

This class includes the cultivation of all other non-perennial plants:

• the cultivation of root crops for animal feed, clover, alfalfa, forage corn, and other similar forages.
• the cultivation of beetroot seed (excluding sugar beet seed) and forage crop seeds
• flower cultivation
• the production of flower buds and shoots,
• the cultivation of flower seeds

This class does not include:

• Cultivation of non-perennial aromatic spices and medicinal plants, see 01.28

01.2 Cultivation of perennial crops

This class includes the cultivation of perennial crops, i.e., plants that live for more than two growing seasons, either dying back (dying) after each season or growing continuously. It also includes the growing of these plants for seed production.

01.21 Cultivation of grapevines

This class includes:

• the cultivation of wine grapes and table grapes in vineyards

• wine production, see 11.02

01.22 Cultivation of tropical and subtropical fruits

This class includes:

• the cultivation of tropical and subtropical fruits: avocados, bananas, Indian dates, figs, mangoes, papayas, pineapples,
  • other tropical and subtropical fruits

01.23 Citrus cultivation

This class includes:

• Cultivation of citrus fruits: citro and pomelo, lemon, orange, tangerine, mandarin and clementine, other citrus fruits

01.24 Cultivation of stone fruits and pitted fruits

This class includes:

• the cultivation of other stone fruits and seeded fruits: apples, apricots, cherries and sour cherries, peaches and nectarines, pears and quince, plums and prunes, other stone fruits and seeded fruits

01.25 Growing other fruit trees and shrubs and dried fruits

This class includes

• Berry cultivation: blueberry, cranberry, currant, kiwi, raspberry, strawberry, and other berries
  • the growth of fruit seeds
  • Edible dried fruit production: almonds, hazelnuts, chestnuts, stics, walnuts, other edible dried fruits
  • the growth of other trees and fruit shrubs

This class does not include

01.26 Growth of oil-bearing fruits

This class includes:

• the growth of oil-bearing fruits: coconut, olives, oil palm, other oil-bearing fruits

This class does not include:

• See the growth of soybeans, peanuts, and other oilseeds. 01.11

01.27 Cultivation of beverage crops

This class includes:

• Cultivation of beverage crops: coffee, tea, cocoa, and other beverage crops.

01.28 Cultivation of spices, aromatic, pharmaceutical, and medicinal plants

This class includes:

• the cultivation of aromatic and spice plants, both perennial and non-perennial: pepper, chili pepper, nutmeg, allspice, star anise and dill, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, vanilla, and other aromatic and spice plants
  • the cultivation of medicinal and narcotic plants
  • the cultivation of plants primarily used in perfumery, pharmaceuticals, or for insecticidal, antifungal, or similar purposes.

01.29 Cultivation of other perennial plants

This class includes:

• the growth of rubber trees
  • the growing of Christmas trees
  • growing trees for resin extraction

This class does not include:

• Collection of resin from trees or of the latex and rubber from wild trees, see 02.30

01.3 Plant propagation

This class includes the production of all vegetative planting materials, including cuttings, buds, and shoots for the direct propagation of plants or for creating grafts in which selected scions are grafted onto rootstocks for eventual planting to produce plants.

This class includes:

• growing plants for planting
• growing plants for decorative purposes, including peat for transplanting
• the growth of living plants for bulbs, tuberous roots, shoots and sprouts, fungal spores
• the activity of tree nurseries, except for forest tree nurseries

This class does not include:

• Forest tree nursery activity, see 02.10

01.4 Livestock Farming

This group includes:

• the raising and breeding of all animals, except aquatic ones.

This group does not include:

• See the enclosure and care of farm animals. 01.62
  • production of fur and leather from slaughterhouses, see 10.11

01.41 Raising calves for milk

This class includes:

• the raising and breeding of dairy cattle
• the production of raw milk from cows and heifers

This class does not include:

• for milk processing, see 10.51

01.42 Raising other cattle and buffaloes

This class includes:

• the raising and breeding of cattle and buffalo for meat
  • the production of the bull's seed (sperm)

01.43 The raising of horses and unicorns

This class includes:

• the raising and breeding of horses, donkeys, mules, and jennets

• raising and training animals for riding and racing, see 93.19

01.44 Raising camels and donkeys

This class includes:

• the breeding and raising of camels (dromedaries) and donkeys

01.45 Raising goats and sheep

This class includes:

• the raising and breeding of goats and sheep
  • the production of raw milk from sheep and goats
  • the production of raw wool from sheep and goats

This class does not include:

01.46 Pig Farming

This class includes:

• the raising and breeding of pigs

This class includes:

• the raising and breeding of poultry: chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, guinea fowl
  • egg production
  • multiplication (hatching) of poultry

This class does not include:

01.49 Raising other animals

This class includes:

• the breeding and rearing of semi-domestic live animals: ostriches and emus, other birds (excluding poultry), insects, rabbits, and other fur-bearing animals
• the production of fur, reptile or bird skin from farm operations
• the activity of worm farms, land snails, slugs, etc.
• the raising of silkworms, the production of silkworm cocoons
• Beekeeping and the production of honey and wax
• the breeding and keeping of domestic animals (other than fish): cats and dogs, birds such as parrots, etc., rodents, etc., the raising of various animals.

This class does not include:

01.5 Mixed farms

This class includes the combined production of plants and animals without specialized plant or animal production. The size of the farm operation is not a determining factor. If crop or livestock production in a given unit is 66 percent or more of the gross margin standard, the combined activity will not be included here but will be classified as crop or livestock farms.

This class does not include:

• mixed animal farms, see group 01.4

01.6 Farming and post-harvest crop support activities

This group includes activities related to agricultural production and agricultural-like activities not undertaken for production purposes (in the sense of harvested agricultural products), carried out for third parties, for direct payment or on a contractual basis. Also included are post-harvest activities for crops, aimed at preparing agricultural products for primary markets.

01.61 Auxiliary activities for plant products

This class includes:

• agricultural activities for third parties, with direct payment or on a contractual basis:
  • preparation of the field;
  • treatment of seeds; spraying, including aerial spraying;
  • pruning fruit trees and vineyards;
  • rice transplanting, beetroot thinning; harvesting;

• disease control (including rabbits) in relation to agriculture.
• Maintenance of agricultural land in good agricultural and environmental condition.
• Maintenance of agricultural irrigation equipment

This class also includes:

• Equipment with agricultural machinery, operators, and a work crew.

This class does not include:

• Post-harvest crop operations, see 01.63

  • Activities related to artificial insemination
  • Stable services for breeding
  • shearing the sheep
  • the enclosure and care of farm animals

This class also includes:

01.63 Plant harvesting operations

This class includes:

• preparation of plants for initial markets, e.g., cleaning, pruning, sorting, disinfection
  • the stripping of the cotton
  • the preparation of tobacco leaves, e.g. drying
  • preparation of cocoa beans
  • waxing the fruit

This class does not include:

• Preparation of agricultural products by the producer; see the corresponding class in groups 01.1 or 01.2.

01.64 Processing of seeds for propagation

This class includes all post-harvest activities aimed at improving the quality of seed multiplication for planting, through the removal of seed trash, immature seeds, those damaged mechanically or by insects, immature seeds, as well as the removal of moisture from the seeds to an acceptable level for storage.

This activity includes drying, cleaning, grading, and processing seeds until they are marketed. It also includes the processing of genetically modified seeds.

This class does not include:

• Seed germination, see groups 01.1 and 01.2
• processing of seeds to extract oil, see 10.41
• research work on the development or modification of new seed forms, see 72.11

01.7 Hunting, trapping, and related services

This class includes:

• hunting and trapping for commercial purposes
• the capture of animals (dead or alive) for food, fur, leather, or for experimental use, in zoological gardens or as companion animals.
• the production of fur, reptile or bird skins from hunting and trapping animals

• The capture on land of marine mammals such as sea cows and seals.

02 Forests and Forest Exploitation

This category includes the production of timber logs as well as the extraction and collection of non-timber forest products. In addition to forest products, forestry activities yield products that bypass processing, such as firewood, charcoal, and logs used in their raw form (e.g., lumber, wood for paper production, etc.). These activities can be carried out in natural forests and in planted forests.

Further processing of wood, starting from sawmills and subsequent wood processing, is excluded. See 16.

• growing trees on the ground: planting, replanting, transplanting, thinning, and maintaining forests and shrublands
• the growth of groves, trees for paper production, and firewood

  • Transportation of logs within the forest. This class does not include:

03 Fishing and Aquaculture

This division includes fishing and aquaculture, covering the use of fish resources from marine and brackish environments. (lagoons with brackish waters) or freshwater environments, for the purpose of catching or harvesting fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and other marine organisms and products (e.g., aquatic plants, pearls, sponges, etc.).

Also included are activities that are normally components of the process of production for one's own account (e.g., planting in seashells for pearl production).

Incidental activity services, marine fishing, freshwater fishing, or aquaculture that are related to marine fishing or aquaculture are included within fishing or aquaculture.

This division does not include the construction and repair of ships and boats (30.1, 33.15) nor fishing activities for sport or recreation. (93.19). The processing of fish, crustaceans, or mollusks, whether in land-based plants or on factory ships (10.20), is not included.

03.1 Fishing

This group includes “fish capture” such as hunting, and the collection and gathering of aquatic game organisms (mainly fish, mollusks, and crustaceans) including plants from oceanic, coastal, and inland waters, for human consumption or other purposes, harvesting by hand (artisanal), or with various types of fishing gear such as nets, lines, and sustainable traps. Such activities may be carried out in inland coastal areas (e.g., harvesting mollusks such as mussels and clams), or by net fishing from the shore using self-made pits or, more commonly, by employing commercial vessels on inland waters, inshore, and in the open sea.

Such activities also include fishing in reservoirs.

03.11 Marine fishing

This class includes:

• Commercial fishing in oceans and coastal waters
• the capture of mollusks and marine crustaceans
• whale hunting
• capture of marine aquatic animals: turtles, sirenians, sea urchins, etc.

This class also includes:

• the activity of vessels that simultaneously engage in the catching, processing, and conserving of fish
• the collection of organisms and other marine materials, natural pearls, sponges, corals, and algae.
• the activity of vessels engaged in both fishing and the processing and storage of fish.

This class does not include:

• the catching of marine mammals, except whales, e.g. sea cows, seals, see 01.70
• Processing of whales on factory ships, see 10.11
• Processing of fish, crustaceans and mollusks on factory ships or shore-based factories, see 10.20
• Leasing of crewed tourist vessels for maritime or coastal water transport (e.g., fishing yachts), see 50.10

03.2 Aquaculture

This group includes “aquaculture,” i.e., the process of production, raising, and cultivation of aquaculture products (fish, mollusks, crustaceans, aquatic plants, crocodiles, alligators, and amphibians) from aquaculture farms and fishing economies; using techniques designed to increase the production of these organisms beyond the environment's natural capacity (e.g., regular stocking, feeding, and protection from predatory animals).

03.21 Marine aquaculture

This class includes:

• Marine fish farming, including ornamental marine fish farming.
• the production of bivalve eggs (oysters and clams, etc.), crayfish, post-larval shrimp, cooking fish, and roe
• Raising mealworms for eating
• the cultivation (farming) of crustaceans, bivalves, other mollusks, and other aquatic animals in marine waters

This class also includes:

• aquatic cultures in brackish waters
• aquatic cultures in tanks or saltwater reservoirs
• reservoir activity for propagation (marine)
• the activity of marine worm farms

This class does not include:

03.22 Freshwater aquaculture

This class includes:

• Freshwater fish farming, including the cultivation of ornamental fish.
  • the cultivation of freshwater crustaceans, bivalves, and other mollusks and aquatic animals
  • breeding tank activity in freshwater
  • Frog farms

• Activities of cultures in trays and saltwater reservoirs, see 03.21
