SECTION Q – HEALTH AND SOCIAL WORK ACTIVITIES

This section includes health-related activities for people and social work. It covers a wide range of activities, from health care provided by professional physicians, in hospitals and other facilities, family care activities that include health care services, and social work activities without the involvement of professional health care.

86 Health activities

This division includes the activities of short- or long-stay hospitals, general or specialized hospitals, surgical hospitals, rehabilitation and detoxification centers, mental health institutions, leprosaria, nursing homes, disease prevention centers, home nursing services, and other health treatment institutions that have accommodation facilities and deal with diagnosing diseases and providing medical treatment according to patients' health conditions.

Also included are medical consultations and general and specialized medical treatment by general practitioners, specialist physicians, and surgeons.

Includes general or specialized dental activities and orthodontic activities.

In addition, this category includes human health activities not performed in hospitals or by medical doctors, but by legally recognized paramedical professionals in patient care.

86.1 Hospital activities

This class includes:

  • activities of short-stay or long-stay hospitals, general hospitals for medical diagnosis and treatment (e.g., local and regional hospitals, hospitals of non-profit organizations, university hospitals, military base and prison hospitals) and hospitals

specialized (e.g., mental health and detoxification hospitals, hospitals for infectious diseases, obstetric and gynecological hospitals, specialized rehabilitation centers).

These activities are carried out primarily for hospitalized patients under the direct supervision of physicians and include:

  • Medical and paramedical personnel services
    • Laboratory and technical facility services, including radiology and anesthesia services.
    • Emergency services
    • Operating room services, pharmaceutical services, hospitality services, food services, and other hospital services.
    • Family planning center services with accommodations that provide medical treatment such as sterilization and pregnancy termination.

This class does not include:

  • laboratory testing and analysis of all types of materials and products,
  • except for medical ones, see 71.20
  • Veterinary activities, see 75.00
  • Health activities for military personnel in the field, see 84.22
  • General or specialized dental practices, e.g., dentists, endodontic and pediatric dentists; oral pathology, orthodontic activities, see 86.23

86.2 Activities of physicians and dentists

This class includes medical consultations and medical treatment provided by general practitioners and specialist physicians, including surgery, dentists, etc.

These activities can be practiced privately, individually, in groups, and in hospital clinics (on an outpatient basis), as well as in clinics located near businesses, schools, nursing homes, trade unions and fraternal organizations, and in patients' homes.

This group also includes:

– private medical consultations for hospitalized patients

86.21 Activities of general practitioners

This class includes:

  • consultations and medical treatments in the field of general medicine, by general practitioners

This class does not include:

  • ambulatory hospital activities for hospitalized patients, see 86.10
  • paramedical activities performed by midwives, nurses and physiotherapists, see 86.90
86.22 Activities of specialist physicians

This class includes:

  • Consultations and medical treatments in the field of specialized medicine by specialist physicians and surgeons.
    • Family planning center services without accommodation that provide medical treatment such as sterilization and pregnancy termination.

This class does not include:

  • ambulatory hospital activities for hospital admissions, see 86.10
    • paramedical activities performed by midwives, nurses and physiotherapists, see 86.90
86.23 Activities of dentists

This class includes:

  • consultations and medical dental treatments, general or specialized, e.g., dentists, endodontic and pediatric dental services; oral pathology.
    • orthodontic activities

This class also includes:

  • Dental activities in operating rooms

This class does not include:

  • manufacture of artificial teeth, dentures, and prostheses by dental laboratories, see 32.50
    • ambulatory hospital activities for hospital admissions, see 86.10
    • dental paramedical activities such as dental hygienists, see 86.90

86.9 Other health activities

86.90 Other health activities

This class includes health activities that are not performed by hospitals or by doctors and dentists:

  • Activities of nurses, midwives, physiotherapists or other paramedical personnel in the fields of optometry, hydrotherapy, medical massage, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and chiropody.
  • homeopathy, chiropractic, acupuncture, etc.

These activities can be practiced privately, individually, in groups, and in hospital clinics (on an outpatient basis), as well as in clinics located near businesses, schools, nursing homes, trade unions and fraternal organizations, and in patients' homes.

These activities can be carried out in health clinics, as well as in clinics located near businesses, schools, nursing homes, trade unions, and other health facilities besides hospitals, as well as in the patient's home or other settings.

This class also includes:

  • Activities of dental paraprofessional personnel, such as dental therapists, school dental nurses, and dental hygienists, who may work independently but are periodically supervised by a dentist.
  • activities of medical laboratories such as:
    • X-ray laboratories and other imaging diagnostic centers
    • Blood testing laboratories
  • activities of blood banks, sperm banks, transplant organ banks, etc.
  • Ambulance transport of patients by any means of transportation, including aircraft. These services are often provided during a medical emergency.

This class does not include:

  • Production of artificial teeth, dentures, and prostheses by dental laboratories, see 32.50
  • transfer of patients without life-saving equipment and without medical personnel, see sections 49, 50, 51
  • testing from non-medical laboratories, see 71.20
  • Testing activities in the field of food hygiene, see 71.20

87 Activities of medical and social care centers.

This category includes providing health care in a facility, combined with nursing services, supervision, or other types of care as needed. These facilities are an important part of the process of delivering care, and the care provided is a mix of medical and social services at levels broader than nursing services.

This class includes:

  • Nursing homes for the elderly
  • vacation homes
  • Nursing care retirement homes
  • nursing care facilities
  • nursing care homes

This class does not include:

  • services performed in the home by health care professionals, see division 86
  • Homes for the elderly without or with minimal nursing care, see 87.30
  • social care activities with accommodation, such as orphanages, child care centers and dormitories, temporary shelter for the homeless, see 87.90

87.2 Activities of care centers for mental retardation, mental health, and substance abuse

This class includes facilities that provide health care services (but are not licensed for hospital care) to people with intellectual disabilities, mental illness, or substance abuse problems.

Care includes shelter, supervision, protection, counseling, and some health care services.

This class includes the following activities:

  • Help for treating alcohol and drug addiction
  • psychiatric care homes
  • Centers for people with emotional disorders
  • Centers for people with intellectual disabilities
  • mental health rehabilitation centers

This class also includes:

  • Centers for the care and treatment of patients with mental health conditions and substance abuse

This class does not include:

  • mental hospitals, see 87.90
  • Accommodation social care activities, such as temporary shelter for the homeless, see 87.90

87.3 Activities of health care centers for the elderly and persons with disabilities

87.30 Activities of health care centers for the elderly and persons with disabilities

This category includes providing health care services in centers and non-medical assistance to the elderly and to persons with disabilities who are unable to care for themselves and/or do not wish to live independently. Care typically includes housing, supervision, and daytime assistance such as help with household maintenance. In some cases, these facilities provide specialized nursing care for individuals in units separate from the others.

This class includes the following activities:

  • Facilitation of daily living assistance
  • Continuous care for pensioners
  • Nursing home with minimal nursing care
  • vacation home without nursing care

This class does not include:

  • Nursing homes for the elderly, see 87.10
  • Social care activity centers with accommodation where medical treatment or education are not significant elements, see 87.90

87.9 Activities of other care centers n.e.c.

87.90 Activities of other care centers, n.e.c.

This class includes the provision of health care services in facilities and assistance for individuals, excluding the elderly and those with disabilities, who are unable to fully care for themselves or who do not wish to live independently.

This class includes:

  • Activities carried out on a 24-hour service basis to provide social assistance to children and specific categories of persons with certain self-care disabilities, but where medical treatment and education are not significant elements.

    • Institutions that care for unmarried mothers and their children.

These activities can be carried out by government institutions or private organizations. This class also includes the following activities:

  • Home for people with social and personal problems

88 Social care activities without accommodation

This division includes a wide range of direct social assistance services for individuals. The activities in this division do not include accommodation, except for temporary accommodation.

This class includes:

  • social care, counseling, social assistance, and other similar services for the elderly and the disabled.

This class includes:

  • Social services, counseling, social assistance, services for refugees, and similar support provided to individuals or families in their homes or elsewhere, and delivered by institutions.

  • Social assistance and orientation activities for children and adolescents
    • Adoption activities, activities for the prevention of violence against children and others
    • Advice on the family budget, marriage, and family; credit and debt counseling services.

    • Activities for victims of disasters, refugees, immigrants, etc., including providing them with temporary or long-term shelter.
    • Professional rehabilitation and training activities for the unemployed where the educational component is limited.
