SECTION R – Arts, Entertainment and Recreation

This section includes a wide range of cultural, entertaining, and relaxing activities to cater to the interests of the general public, including live performances, museums, gambling, and recreational activities.

90 Creative, Art, and Relaxing Activities

This division includes operating facilities and providing services to meet clients' interests. This includes production and promotion, participation in live performances, events, or exhibitions intended for public viewing, and the artistic, creative, and technical preparation for the production of the artistic product and live performances.

This division does not include:

  • operation of museums of all kinds, zoological and botanical gardens, care for historic sites; activities of nature reserves, see division 91
  • Gambling and betting activities, see section 92
  • Sports activities, entertainment, and recreation, see section 93.

Some units that offer cultural, entertainment, or recreational amenities are classified in other divisions such as:

  • Film and video production and distribution, see 59.11, 59.12, 59.13

90.0 Creative activities, arts, and leisure activities

This group includes creative arts activities, artistic performances, and related activities.

90.01 Artistic performances

This class includes:

  • the production of shows, theatrical performances, concerts, operas and ballets and other similar performances:
  • activities of circus groups or orchestral companies or bands;
  • activities of individual artists as actors, dancers, musicians, lecturers, and presenters

This class does not include:

  • Activities of agents or agencies on behalf of theatrical or artistic individuals or groups, see 74.90
  • Actor and extra casting activities, see 78.10
90.02 Support activities for performing arts

This class includes:

  • support activities for the production of performances, theatrical shows, concerts, operas and ballets, and other similar performances:
  • the activities of directors, producers, set designers, builders, etc.

This class also includes:

  • the activity of producers or entrepreneurs of live performances, with or without structures and equipment

This class does not include:

  • Activities of agents or agencies on behalf of theatrical or artistic individuals or groups, see 74.90
  • Actor and extra casting activities, see 78.10
90.03 Artistic creation

This class includes:

  • the activities of individual artists such as sculptors, painters, cartoon designers, engravers, carvers, etc.
  • Activities of individual writers, for all subjects including fictional works and technical writing, etc.
  • Activities of individual journalists
  • the restoration of artistic works such as paintings, etc.

This class does not include:

  • Production of statues, except original artistic ones, see 23.70
  • restoration of organs and other historical musical instruments, see 33.19
  • film and video production, see 59.11, 59.12
  • restoration of furniture (except typical museum restoration), see 95.24
90.04 Use of artistic structures and equipment

This class includes:

  • the use of concert halls, theaters, and other artistic structures

This class does not include:

  • for the use of cinemas, see 59.14
  • Activities of ticket agencies, see 79.20
  • operation of museums of all kinds, see 91.02

91 Libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural activities

This category includes library and archival activities, the operation of museums of all kinds, botanical and zoological gardens, the operation of historic sites, and nature reserve activities. Also included is the preservation and exhibition of objects, sites, and natural wonders of cultural or educational interest (e.g., World Heritage sites, etc.).

This division does not include:

  • Recreational and leisure sports activities, such as the operation of beaches and parks for vacationers, see division 93.

91.0 Libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural activities

91.01 Library and archival activities

This class includes:

  • Activities of libraries of all types for documentation and information, reading, listening, and viewing rooms, public archives serving the general public or a specific clientele such as students, researchers, staff, members, as well as government archives:
  • the organization of a collection, specialized or not;
  • cataloging of collections;
  • Lending and preserving books, maps, periodicals, films, recordings, tapes, works of art, etc.;
  • corrective actions to be completed with the required information, etc.
  • Photographic and video services.
91.02 Museum Activities

This class includes:

  • the functioning of museums of all kinds:
    • art museum, jewelry museum, furniture museum, costume museum, ceramics museum, silverware museum
    • Natural history museums, science and technology museums, historical museums, including military museums
    • Other specialized museums
    • outdoor museums

This class does not include:

  • Activities of commercial galleries, see 47.78
  • restoration of artistic works and collection of museum objects, see 90.03
  • activities of bookstores and archives, see 91.01
91.03 Operation of attractive historic sites and similar buildings for visitors

This class includes:

  • the operation and preservation of historic sites and buildings

This class does not include:

91.04 Botanical and zoological gardens and natural reserve activities

This class includes:

  • the functioning of botanical and zoological gardens
  • the functioning of nature reserves, including wildlife reserves, etc.

This class does not include:

  • operation of sport fishing and hunting in reserves, see 93.19

92 Gambling and betting activities

This category includes the operation of gambling facilities such as casinos, bingo halls, and video gaming centers, as well as gambling services like lotteries and betting.

  • the sale of lottery tickets
  • operation (exploitation) of coin-operated gambling machines

93 Sports, entertainment, and relaxation activities.

This category includes recreational activities and sports activities (excluding museum activities, the protection of historical sites, botanical garden, zoological park, and nature reserve activities, and gambling and betting activities).

Excluded from this division are the dramatic arts, music, and other entertainment arts, such as the production of live theatrical performances, concerts and operas or ballets, and other stage productions; see division 90.

93.1 Sports activities

This group includes the operation of sports facilities and the operation of sports teams or clubs that primarily participate in live sporting events before an audience that has paid to watch the activity- athletes engaged in participating in sporting events before a paying audience, owners of participants in competitions such as auto, dog, horse racing, etc. who are primarily engaged in their participation in spectator sports events, sports coaches who provide specialized services to support participants in sports or competitions, arena and stadium operators, other activities, organizing, promoting, or managing sports events, etc.

93.11 Operation of sports structures

This class includes:

  • the use of facilities for sports activities, indoor or outdoor (open, closed or covered, with or without spectator seating):
    • soccer stadiums, hockey arenas, cricket grounds, rugby stadiums, track and field stadiums
    • racetrack for cars, dogs, and horse racing
    • swimming pools
    • Stadiums for a variety of sports
    • Winter sports arena
    • Ice hockey arena
    • boxing arena
    • golf course
    • bowling lane
  • The organization and operation of indoor and outdoor sporting events for professionals and amateurs by organizers with the appropriate structures.

This class includes the management and enabling of staff to put these structures into operation. This class does not include:

  • Rental of recreational and sporting equipment, see 77.21

93.12 Sports club activities

This category includes the activities of sports clubs, whether professional, semi-professional, or amateur, which give their members the opportunity to engage in sporting activities.

This class includes:

  • the functioning of sports clubs:
    • soccer clubs
    • bowling clubs
    • swimming clubs
    • golf clubs
    • boxing clubs
    • Winter sports clubs
  • Chess clubs
  • marked clubs or on the field
  • shooting clubs, etc.

This class does not include:

  • Sports instruction from individual teachers, trainers; see 85.51
  • operation/use of sports facilities, see 93.11
  • organization and development of sporting activities by sports clubs for professionals and amateurs, in its own premises, open or closed, see 93.11
93.13 Gymnasium

This class includes:

  • Clubs and facilities for fitness and bodybuilding

This class does not include:

  • Sports instruction from individual teachers, trainers; see 85.51
93.19 Other sports activities

This class includes:

  • Activities of producers and promoters of sporting activities, with or without facilities
  • activities of sportsmen and athletes on their own behalf, referees, judges, timekeepers, etc.
  • activities of sports leagues and regulatory bodies;
  • activities related to the promotion of sporting activities;
  • activities of stables, sheds, and race garages;
  • the operation of sport fishing and hunting reserves
  • Mountain guiding activities
  • Support activities for hunting and sport fishing

This class does not include:

  • School sports activities and games, see 85.51
  • Activities of sports instructors, teachers, and trainers, see 85.51

93.2 Other recreational and leisure activities

This group includes a wide range of units that utilize facilities or offer services to cater to their clients' leisure interests. This includes the development of a variety of activities, such as travel vehicle races, water races, games, shows, themed exhibitions, and picnic areas.

This group does not include sports activities and the dramatic arts, music, and other artistic and entertainment activities.

93.21 Amusement and theme park activities

This category includes amusement park and theme park activities. It encompasses the operation of a variety of activities, such as land vehicle races, watercraft races, games, shows, themed exhibitions, and picnic areas.

93.29 Other amusement and recreation activities, n.e.c.

This class includes activities related to amusement and recreation (except amusement parks and theme parks) not classified elsewhere:

  • coin-operated gaming activities;
  • amusement park activities (without accommodation);
  • the operation of recreational transport structures, e.g., maritime;
  • operation of ski slopes;
  • the lending of recreational equipment as part of recreational amenities;
  • Exhibitions and entertaining performances
  • Beach activities, including the rental of facilities such as changing rooms, baggage storage areas, seating, etc.
  • the operation of nightclubs and dance floors

This class includes the activities of producers or promoters of live events, other than sporting or artistic ones, with or without structures.

This class does not include:

  • For the operation of the cable cars, see 49.39
  • for boating and fishing, see 50.10, 50.30
  • the provision of spaces and structures for short stays by visitors in parks, forests and fields, campsites, see 55.30
